My foot? Motor imagery-evoked pain, alternative strategies and implications for laterality recognition tasks.

چکیده
Asking patients to determine the laterality (i.e. left or right) of images depicting parts of the body has been an intriguing development within the management of patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Such Laterality Recognition Tasks (LRTs) are known to involve the mental rotation of one’s own limbs [1–3], activating areas of the brain involved in the execution of related limb movements [4,5] and subsequently considered to have a role in the assessment and treatment of patients with CRPS and other conditions [6–8].

Is successful rehabilitation of complex regional pain syndrome due to sustained attention to the affected limb? A randomised clinical trial.
In complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS1) initiated by wrist fracture, a motor imagery program (MIP), consisting of hand laterality recognition followed by imagined movements and then mirror movements, reduces pain and disability, but the mechanism of effect is unclear. Possibilities include sustained attention to the affected limb, in which case the order of MIP components would not alter the ...
متن کاملGraded motor imagery for pathologic pain: a randomized controlled trial.
BACKGROUND Phantom limb and complex regional pain syndrome type 1 (CRPS1) are characterized by changes in cortical processing and organization, perceptual disturbances, and poor response to conventional treatments. Graded motor imagery is effective for a small subset of patients with CRPS1. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether graded motor imagery would reduce pain and disability for a more gener...
متن کاملBrain circuitry underlying pain in response to imagined movement in people with spinal cord injury.
Pain following injury to the nervous system is characterized by changes in sensory processing including pain. Although there are many studies describing pain evoked by peripheral stimulation, we have recently reported that pain can be evoked in subjects with complete spinal cord injury (SCI) during a motor imagery task. In this study, we have used functional magnetic resonance imaging to explor...
متن کاملA Study of Various Feature Extraction Methods on a Motor Imagery Based Brain Computer Interface System
Introduction: Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems based on Movement Imagination (MI) are widely used in recent decades. Separate feature extraction methods are employed in the MI data sets and classified in Virtual Reality (VR) environments for real-time applications. Methods: This study applied wide variety of features on the recorded data using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classifie...
متن کاملPredictive Models to Determine Imagery Strategies Employed by Children to Judge Hand Laterality
A commonly used paradigm to study motor imagery is the hand laterality judgment task. The present study aimed to determine which strategies young children employ to successfully perform this task. Children of 5 to 8 years old (N = 92) judged laterality of back and palm view hand pictures in different rotation angles. Response accuracy and response duration were registered. Response durations of...
